about

"PANNA II layers eroded textures to capture the glowing aura of ancestral landscapes."
-Emily Pothast, the Wire Magazine

"Fans of Merzbow will be happy with this one; the claustrophobia is unrelenting. Swirl upon swirl of feedback descends on the sonic field [. . .] Is it better to be able to hear what’s in the cave, or to be drowned in sound?"
-Richard Allen, A Closer Listen

Kole Galbraith is a musician and sound artist originally from Wenatchee, Washington. He settled in Seattle after living in Germany, Mexico, and Austria. While traveling, Galbraith immersed himself in improvised experimental music across genres, ranging from free jazz, harsh noise, new music, and metal. He has exhibited his works in galleries and venues throughout the west coast and in Austria. Galbraith is a descendant of the Colville and Sinixt Tribes, and an enrolled member of the Peoria Tribe of Indians in Oklahoma.

PANNA II is the second installment from a studio series curated, composed and performed by the artist. Shrouded in noise and darkness, Galbraith eludes to conceptual undertones involving ancient and contemporary ancestry and experience. Like the scavengers, hunters and fishers, Galbraith collects a bounty of field recordings and textures that he weaves into abstract narratives, evoking the experiences and stories of his community. In their search for autonomy, voice and survival, these stories contain despair and grief. In other cases, the glacial and organic pacing of his work is a catalyst for tranquility and introspection. PANNA II evokes the past and its relationship to the present. Galbraith tries to capture this not in writing, but in stone. Existence is resistance.
